COMPREHENSIVE STUDY FOR SPECIAL CHILDREN AND THEIR SPECIAL TEACHERS

Minister of National Education Ziya Selçuk introduced the "Special Education Professional Improvement Programs" aiming at increasing knowledge, skill and competence of teachers working in the special education field. "Our teachers working with children who need special education wanted to learn about recent developments and new sources regarding this field," said Minister Selçuk adding that the Ministry previously prepared a special education professional improvement program and book set within this context.

Minister of National Education Ziya Selçuk said during the promotion meeting organized for the "Special Education Professional Improvement Programs" that the Ministry has been preparing more comprehensive studies for special children and their special teachers.

Noting that Special Education Professional Improvement Programs will play a major role in increasing the welfare of children who need special education, Selçuk stated, "We are working in an effort to provide all kinds of education opportunities for our children. Within this context, we are increasing the number of special education schools, support teachers who work in these schools and improve the infrastructure. We also increased the quality of education by enriching contents and provided related education materials, devices and tools."

Sustainable training package for teachers
Addressing teachers who work with children needing special education, Selçuk asked, "What do you need? What kind of opportunities would you like to have in order to give more to these students?"

"We have seen that professional improvement training programs are crucial at this point, in other words, our teachers want to be informed about the recent developments and reach new sources in their field. They expected us to support them with training programs. Within this framework, we expanded the context of projects concerning autism spectrum disorder and prepared comprehensive professional improvement programs and published sets of books," said Selçuk.

Minister Selçuk stressed that the new professional improvement programs will provide teachers the opportunity to have a sustainable training package adding that he believed that these programs will lead to important changes in the lives of students, their parents and teachers.

The program was supported by the Anadolu University and UNESCO
Expressing that transformation, innovation and differences achieved as a part of professional improvement process must be adapted to life, Selçuk went on to say that the training program includes many sub-titles such as inclusive education, integration, attention deficit, hyperactivity, physical deficiency, chronic health problems, visual disability, language and speech disorder, mild disability, mental disability, borderline intelligence, hearing disability and adaptation disability. There are different expert trainers for each and every single sub-title. We received the support of the Anadolu University within this context."

Minister Selçuk thanked the Anadolu University and UNESCO Turkey National Commission for their contributions.
